Will there be Minecraft 2?

Minecraft 2

Minecraft was released in 2011, and ever since, the game has managed to sell millions of copies and amass a player base that is unlike anything else out there. The decision of Microsoft to buy Mojang studios was one the best ones they’ve made in their history.

Minecraft is the most popular game of all time. So why hasn’t Mojang created a sequel to the original game to capitalize on this fame? Why run the same old code?

Let’s find out!

Minecraft is still very popular

Why fix something that ain’t broken? And Minecraft is far from broken; it still has millions of players playing it all the time, so why would Mojang studios go out of there to ruin the fun for all these players?

Minecraft isn’t a game that, once you finish, you won’t play it again for a while. No. It’s not a story mode game; it lets the player wave their own stories with the help of their imagination, and Minecraft simply provides them the tools to unleash their creativity in this infinite sandbox world.

The replayability of Minecraft is what made it so famous, and it will also help it maintain this popularity, so that’s one reason why there will be no Minecraft 2!

Other franchises

Minecraft Legends

Rather than creating a clone of Minecraft with better features, Mojang simply decided to make new franchises like Minecraft Earth, Dungeons, and now Legends. This is an excellent way of giving players a breath of fresh air but in the same Minecraft ecosystem. This way, the original game stays relevant while you make money from new franchises.

Splitting risk

If Minecraft 2 does come out sometime in the future, what will happen to the Minecraft we have now? Will the devs abandon it? Will it continue to get updates? Why would players switch to Minecraft 2?

If such a venture is confirmed, splitting the fanbase in half is the most significant risk Mojang has to deal with.

Constant Updates

It’s not like Minecraft is dying; we keep getting new updates every year; the Minecraft Live event is watched by millions across the Globe, so if Mojang can simply update the existing game, why would they make a new one?

Community

The Minecraft community is split into factions; some play on PC, some pay on console, the switch, and even on Mobiles. If Minecraft 2 came out, Mojang would have to create a version for all devices, which would cost a ton of money.
